Kham Khlaneang (Khmer: ខាំ ខ្លានាង), born in 1996, is a Kun Khmer fighter from Kampong Chhnang Province, known for his small appearance but fearless fighting approach.
Early Life and Entry into Kun Khmer
Khlaneang’s path to Kun Khmer mirrors that of many Cambodian fighters, beginning with humble origins as a young construction worker. Following the passing of his father in 2007 and with his mother unable to work due to age, Khlaneang took on the responsibility of providing for his family. Despite the challenges he faced, his passion for Kun Khmer remained undeterred.
Inspired by the legendary fighter Bird Kham, Khlaneang found his mentor and trainer in his idol. Watching Bird Kham’s fights since a young age, Khlaneang embarked on his Kun Khmer journey with the goal of attaining the same level of fame and recognition. Under Bird Kham’s guidance, Khlaneang honed his skills, earning victories over numerous foreign opponents and earning a special place in the hearts of his fans. Although his great fighting style, chance for Khlaneang to be on the display seems scare to his small weight class with rare challengers, especially from foreign fighters.
The Gold Medalist
Kham Khlaneang’s crowning achievement came at the 2023 SEA Games, hosted in his home country. Competing in the Kun Khmer 51kg category, Khlaneang displayed unparalleled skill and determination, ultimately clinching the gold medal after a hard-fought battle against Vietnamese fighter Lê Công Nghị in the finale. His triumph on such a prestigious stage solidified his status as one of Cambodia’s most formidable Kun Khmer fighters.
