Long Sophy

Long Sophy (Khmer: ឡុង សុភី), also known as Ny Sophy, born in 1991 in Battambang province is Kun Khmer fighter, renowned for his tactical clinching and close-contact knee strikes, earning him the nickname “Nak Leng Chungkung Peus,” which translates to “The Venomous Knee Assassin.” Throughout his career, he proudly held eight Kun Khmer belts.

Early Life and Introduction to Kun Khmer

Growing up in Battambang, Sophy harbored dreams of living in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Following his brother’s footsteps, he moved to Phnom Penh but soon found himself disinterested in formal education since he had already abandoned school for two years. Instead, he turned to Kun Khmer training. Remarkably, after just 14 days of training, Sophy competed in his first match, relying solely on the fiery determination of youth to secure victory.

    Illustrious Career in Khmer Boxing

Throughout his nearly two-decade-long career, he faced formidable opponents such as Lao Sinat, Keo Rumchong, Roeung Sophorn, Pich Seiha, and Maeun Sophea, captivating audiences with his thrilling matches. His intense rivalries with Keo Rumchong and Lao Sinat, notably, electrified the Bayon Arena.

Over a span of 20 years, Long Sophy competed in 11 championship events, emerging victorious and claiming eight belts. Additionally, he secured commendable placements, including second, third, and fourth positions in three other events, solidifying his status as one of the most decorated Kun Khmer fighters in history.

Despite his dominance in the ring, defeating countless Cambodian and foreign fighters alike, Long Sophy’s fights beyond Cambodia were limited, with only a handful of matches in Thailand and none in other countries.

    Resurgence: Return to the Spotlight

In a surprising turn of events, Long Sophy announced his retirement from Kun Khmer in 2023, following only a few appearances in the ring that year. While his decision perplexed fans, Sophy expressed gratitude to his supporters via social media. Though he hinted at feelings of disappointment, he chose not to disclose the exact reasons for his departure. In his farewell message, he expressed deep appreciation for the love and support he received throughout his career, acknowledging that while he cherished the sport, it was time to bid farewell and embark on a new chapter in life.

However, viewers were surprised to witness his return to the ring on TVK on February 25, 2024, where he faced off against a French fighter. Despite his efforts, the match ended in defeat after five rounds, leaving fans curious about his future prospects. Only time will tell if Sophy can reclaim his former glory and restore his name in the sport.
