Lor Samnang (Khmer: ឡោ សំណាង) is a retired Kun Khmer fighter, originally from Kandal Province and then raised in Battambang Province until his settlement in Phnom Penh.
Early Life and Entry into Kun Khmer
Despite lacking a lineage of boxing relatives, Lor Samnang’s passion for martial arts, inspired by senior fighters like the legendary Pich Bunthoeun, led him to begin training in Kun Khmer in 1997 under masters Chea Tong and Yim Yoeung at Battambang Stadium. The sense of belonging he felt under their guidance fueled his dedication, culminating in his first match at the age of 18, where he secured a TKO victory in the 51kg weight class. This initial triumph ignited his devotion to Kun Khmer, prompting a year of further challenges in both Battambang and the Cambodia-Thailand border rings before his relocation to Phnom Penh in 1998, facilitated by an introduction from Phin Sophal. In Phnom Penh, he trained under kickboxing trainer Vaen Sophal and later under master Troeung Sos Say.
Illustrious Boxing Career
In Phnom Penh, Lor Samnang’s talent flourished, earning him his first televised match just two months into his training. His victory in that match against Chantha Phouthong set the stage for a remarkable career filled with numerous local titles and belts. Over the years, he faced formidable opponents such as Voy Chandara, Nuon Phearak, and Pich Bunthoeun, showcasing his skill and tenacity in the ring. Samnang claimed his first belt in 2006 at an event organized by CTN.
Retirement and Comeback
Tragically, Lor Samnang’s career was momentarily derailed by a severe traffic accident in May 2023, necessitating brain surgery. However, with the generous support of his fans and benefactors, including former Prime Minister Hun Sen, he made a full recovery. Now, with his return to intensive training, a comeback to the ring is imminent, signaling the continuation of his inspiring journey in Kun Khmer.
