Roeung Sophorn (Khmer: រឿង សោភ័ណ្ឌ), born in 1991 in Kandal Province, has swiftly risen as a dominant figure in the realm of Kun Khmer, showcasing remarkable skills with his soaring high kicks and formidable left punches. His prowess in the ring has earned him the moniker “Dai Plaoeng Chaoeng Runtah,” loosely translating to “the Thunderous Fury of Fists and Kicks,” a fitting tribute to his explosive and powerful fighting style.
Journey into Kun Khmer
His journey into the world of combat sports began at the tender age of 12 or 13 when he started training at grade 2 or 3. Inspired by his elder brother Roeung Sophak who was already a boxer, Sophorn’s passion for Kun Khmer was nurtured by his father, who provided unwavering support by consistently sending him to training sessions.
Despite facing the challenges of limited education, having completed only the 9th grade, Sophorn’s dedication to Kun Khmer was unwavering. His early struggles in the sport, coupled with financial constraints and the lack of proper training facilities, led him to contemplate giving up on multiple occasions. However, the fire within him burned brighter, pushing him to persevere through the hardships that threatened to derail his dreams.
Career and Achievements
Under the guidance of his trainer, Sen Bunthen, and at Sen Bunthen Penkak Kun Khmer Gym, Sophorn honed his skills and developed into a true warrior of the ring.
Of his impressive fight record above, he only experiences 15 defeats and 02 draws. Notably, he has established a remarkable track record of securing victories, boasting over 82 TKO victories. Sophorn claims to have acquired 11 belts.
On December 14, 2024, Sophorn secured another remarkable victory, knocking down an Australian fighter Hasan Solany in round 1 in a championship event hosted by Kun Khmer Super Fighter (KSF) in Sydney, Australia. This triumph earned him the prestigious title of “Best of the Best 2024 Welterweight Champion”.
Challenges and Comebacks
Sophorn’s journey in Kun Khmer has not been without its challenges. There were instances where unsuccessful contests for championship belts led him to contemplate quitting the sport. The combination of low fighting fees and difficulties finding a proper gym tested his resolve. Despite these setbacks, Sophorn weathered the storms, demonstrating remarkable resilience.
His determination led to a triumphant return to the ring, solidifying his status as one of the most exciting fighters in the Kun Khmer circuit. Through sheer grit and skill, he not only resurrected his career but also became a source of inspiration for aspiring fighters facing their own struggles in the pursuit of excellence.
International Recognition
Roeung Sophorn’s prowess extends beyond the borders of Cambodia, as he has successfully competed on the international stage, particularly in France. His performances abroad have earned him recognition and respect from the global Kun Khmer community, further cementing his legacy as a true ambassador of the sport.
