Meas Bunthen (Khmer: មាស ប៊ុនថេន), born in 2004 in Banteay Meanchey Province, has emerged as one of the brightest new faces in Kun Khmer, capturing attention with his meteoric rise in the martial arts scene.
A Remarkable Entry into the Spotlight
In October 2024, Bunthen’s unexpected participation in a high-stakes bout against seasoned Spanish fighter Mario Alvares proved to be a turning point in his career. Called in as a last-minute substitute with just four days of preparation, he defied all odds by securing a split-decision victory over Alvares. The Spanish veteran, known for his power and experience, had even knocked down SEA Games gold medalist Chhut Sereyvanthong in the first round during their encounter in France months before.
Overcoming the Odds
Bunthen’s win was nothing short of remarkable. Despite enduring heavy strikes from Alvares, he demonstrated resilience and strategic counterattacks, dealing significant damage and leaving his opponent with a bleeding nose in the first round. Reflecting on the unexpected opportunity, Bunthen recalled being at a local pagoda when he received the invitation to join the prestigious event. Seizing the moment, he immediately committed to intensive training to prove himself on the international stage.
His victory over Alvares, though not without controversy among fans, secured him a place in the finals against compatriot Thun Vanna. Unfortunately, Vanna suffered a knee injury during his semifinal match, leading to Bunthen being declared the Boostrong Kun Khmer champion by default. The win marked his first career title and came with a significant cash prize.
Future Ambitions
Looking ahead, Bunthen reflected on his rapid ascent with a mix of pride and regret. While thrilled with his triumph, he expressed disappointment at not being able to face Vanna in the final round, as he had hoped to compete against the best fighters. Among his aspirations are bouts against prominent Kun Khmer stars such as Bird Sangkhim and Pich Sambath. We will see more how this fighter continue his journey.

| NOTE: Fight records of Kun Khmer fighters vary across TV stations. Therefore, I maintain an independent tally, adding one after each new fight to ensure consistency. These statistics include bouts under all rules such as Kun Khmer, Mas Fight, MMA, and Kickboxing and at all levels, including amateur fights, as Kun Khmer has historically lacked a standardized recording system. As a result, totals may appear higher than those of some international fighters, whose records often include only professional bouts. | |
